Faculty & Administration

Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy is led by Director of Education Sarah Martinez and staff and the school’s board of trustees. Our staff and board are committed to the path of reaching cultural and linguistic goals for future generations, carrying the core values of the Tribe into all future possibilities.

Director of Education

Sarah Martinez was born and raised in Sacramento, Calif. where she attended Sacramento public schools. After attending Sacramento City College for one year, Sarah transferred to the UC Davis, where she majored in Spanish and minored in Sociology. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1972.

Cultural Assistant

Diana Almendariz is of Maidu, Wintun, Hupa, Yurok and Cherokee descent. She is a Cultural Interpreter, a consultant in ethno-biology and a Cultural Demonstration Specialist.

Primary Class Teacher

Ben is the new primary class teacher at Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. In 2001 he earned his B.A. in American Indian Studies from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ben earned his M.A. in Native American Studies in 2003 and completed his Ph.D. in Native American Studies in 2009 from the University of California at Davis.

Infant-Toddler Teacher & Parent Educator

María Yolanda Calderón is Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy's Infant-Toddler teacher/parent educator. She obtained her first bachelor's degree in Dentistry from Mexico, and her second bachelor's in Psychology from California State University Sacramento. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Counseling Education.

Intermediate Class Teacher

Norman Campiz is the intermediate class teacher for Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. He earned his bachelor's in Mathematics and his Multicultural/Multilingual Elementary Teaching Credential from California State University Sacramento.

Preschool/Kindergarten Teacher

Marisa Garcia Fuentes is Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy's Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Lindamood-Bell teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Spanish, and an Master of Arts from Stanford University.

Behavior Assistant

Susan Kreun is a Behavior Assistant at Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. She has been with the Academy since April 2008. Susan has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor in Human Relations from Golden Gate University. She received her certificate in the Autism Spectrum Disorders specialized studies program through the UC Davis Extension.

Music and Theater instructor

Lenore Turner-Heinson is the Music and Theater instructor of Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. Lenore has a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Theater from the University of California Davis.

Librarian

Marianne grew up in Southern California, but has spent some time living in Nebraska, Michigan, Yellowstone National Park and Portland, Oregon. Before starting her position as librarian at Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy, she studied English Literature at California State University Bakersfield where she received a B.A. in English.

Academy Coordinator

Robin Nelson is the academy coordinator at Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. She has been a member of the Academy staff since April 2008.

Primary Class Teacher

Kristin joined Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy in 2012 as the Primary Class Teacher. Born and raised in Alaska, Kristin grew up enjoying nature and appreciating the wild. She graduated with honors from Dartmouth College (Hanover, New Hampshire) with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Elementary Education.

Physical Education Instructor

Rod Totton is Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy's Physical Education Instructor. Rod has years of experience as a coach and in the Marine Corps. He is an ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer, has a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Activity Supervisor Clearance Certificate, is a member of the National Federation of High School Coaches Association and American Coaching Academy.
